When buying your first bowling ball the best choice is a polyester ball. The performance bowling balls won't make any difference until you learn how to hook the ball. The performance aspect of these balls comes from core and coverstock qualities that effect the roll of the ball when it is thrown with spin or as bowlers say "revs". If you are already putting some revolutions on the ball then the best choice is a low end or cheaper reactive resin ball.
Once you have made up your mind about the type of ball you want to buy the next concern is the ball weight. This has a lot to do with feel. You want to use as much weight as possible without losing control. It should be comfortable for you but not too light. The idea is not to be able to throw the ball as hard as you can, but to let the weight of the ball itself drive into the pins and mix them up. As an example, a professional bowler would not score as well with a 13 pound ball that was thrown harder versus a 16 pound one that was thrown a little slower. This is caused by the lighter ball deflecting too much and not carrying the pins as well. When choosing the weight remember that the ball will be drilled precisely for your hand which makes it easier to hold on to the ball.
Another consideration is the type of grip that is drilled into the ball. The main choices are the conventional and fingertip grips. The difference between them is that in the conventional grip the fingers go into the ball up to the second joint and in the fingertip grip they go in up to the first joint. The thumb hole is the same in both. This decision should be based on how serious you want to get. The fingertip grip can be slightly harder to hold onto but will make it easier to put revs on the ball. Nearly every high average bowler uses a fingertip grip.
